Event Description : DANCE "Nrityarpan : Offerings to the Gods in Odissi dance"

Nrityashilp- Guru Surendranath Jena Odissi Dance Foundation presents Odissi dance recital by the disciples of Guru Pratibha Jena. They will perform compositions created in the tradition of Guru Surendra Nath Jena's style of Odissi, a dynamic and highly individualistic style. Inspired and enriched by the temple sculptures of Orissa such as the Lingaraj, Jagannath Puri, Konark and Chausath Yogini temples, this unique Odissi style derives from the rural culture and its various arts - among them, jatra theatre, patachitra scrolls, tala patra paintings, and Oriya literary texts. Most of all, this dance style echoes life in all its moods, as much as it seeks to drench - and to be drenched - in the spirit of the divine. On the occasion of Ram Navami the senior dancers: Jaya Mehta, Aastha Gandhi, Swaati Vivek and Raudri Singh alongwith younger dancers present choicest of compositions of Guru Surendra Nath Jena and Pratibha Jena.

NRITYASHILP- Guru Surendranath Jena Odissi Dance Foundation :
Nrityashilp Dance Foundation was founded by Smt. Pratibha Jena Singh in 2008 to propogate the unique Odissi dance style of Guru Surendranath Jena. The aim of Nrityashilp is two- fold; firstly, to reach out to wider audiences through performances, workshops and secondly to provide holistic training to the students in this style of dance along with an insight into Odisha’s art, history and culture.

Guru Surendranath Jena :
Recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for the year 2005-06 for his immense contribution to this dance form, a film documenting his style of Odissi was made by AHRC Resarch Centre for CrossCultural Music and Dance Performances, Roehampton University, London, 2005- 06.

He made a distinctive style of Odissi, which derives its technique from the ancient temple sculptures of Odisha was developed by Guru Surendranath Jena in1960’s. He was the only one to revive these sculptures through his dance, keeping the chastity of the form. Guru Jena’s choreography is a beautiful amalgamation of the spontaneity of everyday life and Orissa’s art, culture and ritual practices. Guruji always believed in co-existence of bhaav and bhangima, which is intricately interwoven in his compositions. His vibrant and enigmatic style upholds the belief that bhakti finds expression in dance and music, which is a form of sadhna, pure devotion to God.

Guru Pratibha Jena Singh : 

Recipient of Shringari Shyam Sundar Award by Odissi Sangeet Sabha, Delhi, in 1995, she is currently serving as the artistic director of Nrityashilp. Being Guru Surendranath Jena’s eldest daughter, Pratibha Jena began her training in dance at an early age under her father’s avid guidance. She went on to imbibe the qualities of his Odissi style and has become its foremost exponent. She has not only lighted the national stage but has also made a mark on the global platform with her performances, workshops and lecture- demonstrations. Her works in Odissi have been documented by Holistic Resource Centre of America in 2009. Teaching Odissi at Triveni Kala Sangam, New Delhi, since 1997, Pratibha is an accomplished performer and choreographer in her own right and continues the journey that her father embarked on.
