Event Description : "Conflicts Are Not Gender Neutral: How to Protect and Empower Refugee Women and Girls" panel discussion.
Armed conflicts have a devastating impact on societies and economies.The most vulnerable are the women and girls of these communities, who are disproportionately affected by the forced displacement, lack of access to basic amenities, severe rights violations and sexual and gender-based violence that often emerge from conflict. Thus, it is critical for humanitarian interventions to integrate a gender perspective into relief programs to address gender-based protection concerns comprehensively.
Against this background, The Ara Trust and The Aman Trust are organizing a panel discussion, supported by the Embassy of Switzerland in India, to examine how conflicts expose women and girls to increased vulnerability, and how aid organizations can adopt gender-specific responses to the same, in both conflict and post-conflict settings.
About the Speakers:
The panelists will include -
Ms. Yasuko Shimizu, Deputy Chief of Mission, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, India;
Ms. Urvashi Butalia, Founder & CEO, Zubaan Books;
and other eminent persons in the field of women's rights and international humanitarian assistance;
with Mr. Omair Ahmad, writer and political analyst, as Moderator.
About the Organization : The Ara Trust is India's only refugee law centre. Its mission is to promote a rights-based discourse on forced migration through innovative methods, and to operate as a centre for law and policy.
