Artist's Comments : As a watercolour artist, I realised that this medium has opened a whole new world for me. The more I paint with watercolours, the more I start liking it. Having attended an art college followed by a master’s degree, helped me realise that this medium is very dear to me. My education also introduced me to other mediums and forms of art, some of which I practice even today. They include charcoal and dry pastels. While these mediums are diametrically opposite to watercolours in the approach, manner and style, water colours is more intricate and time consuming. What is interesting about this medium is its definiteness. There is no scope of a second change in water colours. This challenge is something scary but at a deeper level, it is exhilarating and exciting.
What’s stimulating about this medium is its absolute spontaneity. It demands accuracy and quickness. Whenever I start a painting, all I have is an idea of how the work would shape up. I rarely have the picture of a finished painting in my head. My paintings evolve as colour and water flow on the paper. In that sense, they reflect my mood and state of mind at that particular moment.
Also, the medium is best suited for the subjects I choose to paint. Nature, flowers and landscapes form the main centre of my work. I am also drawn by freestyle approach, wet-on-wet watercolours (which is the style I follow) enables me to capture fleeting and spontaneous emotions that are deeper and better than any other medium can offer.
My subjects are very Indian in nature and I seek freshness in my work.
Based on my experience, I feel, no other medium offers the kind of freshness that water colours can offer. Of course, it’s a very difficult medium and it doesn’t offer a second chance. That challenge is ultimate as it tests your skill.
