Event Description : TALK : SAGE presents "Re-Thinking Slavery And Freedom: Or What Is A Man?" Ninth IESHR Lecture by Catherine Hall, Professor of Modern British Social and Cultural History at University College London.
The talk will draw on the work of the Legacies of British Slave-ownership project at University College London which has been investigating British slave-owners in the Caribbean across the period from 1763-1833. The significance of these men and women has been for the most part ignored in British history writing where the focus has been on abolition rather than the long history of Britain’s involvement in the slavery business. Yet they constituted an important group of the rich and powerful, not only before but also after emancipation. Examined in particular are the writing and legacies of Edward Long, the most distinguished historian of Jamaica, whose work is still widely cited and who was a critical figure in the defining of racial slavery.
