Event Description : Screening of the movie "I Am Not Here" directed by Academy Award Nominee and National Award Winner Ashvin Kumar.
Director Deepa Mehta will present the film
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Ashvin Kumar; Director, Christina MacGillivray; Co-Producer & Lead Researcher, Igor Bosc; Work in Freedom Programme, International LabourOrganization, Pia Oberoi; Advisor on Migration and Human Rights, Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Karuna Nundy, Advocate, Supreme Court of India.
This conversation will bring together a diverse panel to discuss the escalating migrant crises across the globe and the lives of migrant domestic workers.
Note on "I Am Not Here" and Ashvin Kumar :
Ashvin a writer/director with an Academy Award nomination for his short-‐film “Little Terrorist” and two--‐time National Award winner for his documentaries on ‘Kashmir’:“Inshallah, football”, about a Kashmiri teenager wanting to play football in Brazil, and “Inshallah, Kashmir” is about the fallout of armed conflict on the people of Kashmir.
His new documentary film “ I am Not Here” produced by the UN Human Rights Office brings to life the harsh reality of undocumented migrant domestic workers through the stories of three women - Flores in Zurich, Jennifer Norgriff-Bernard in New York who left Trinidad to escape poverty and a forced marriage, and a young woman unable to reveal her identity in Kuala Lumpur who was sexually assaulted and beaten by her employers.
Migrants undergo perilous journeys, risking drowning, deportation, arrest, physical and sexual violence in true hope of finding a place of greater safety and economic opportunity in a distant country. Those who survive the journey become nannies, housekeepers and drivers– ever present yet willing themselves to disappear into the multitudes of the new country. In the best scenario, their dreams become realized, enabling their children’s education. In the worst, stories of horror are rendered reality – locked away in homes by nationals, abused without recourse and kept in fear. This is a film about three distinct women who undertook these perils in hope of a better life.
Ashvin Kumar will now be acting in a leading role in Sabal Singh Shekhawat (director of ‘Fireflies' and prolific ad film maker) new inde short ‘Ring of Fire’. Acting is the reason he got into film directing and screen writing. He has been directed by Atul Kumar, Zuleikha Allana and Sanjeev Sharma. Ashvin has been to Bennington College, where he studied acting in the USA and has taken courses at LAMDA and the Actors Centre in the UK. He will also be acting in his upcoming feature film ’Noor’, a love-story about teenagers coming-of-age against set in Kashmir which he is also directing
