Event Description : Project Motley presents "Codes of Gender" film screening & discussion as part of 'Young Masculinities' series.

Arguing that advertising not only sells things, but also ideas about the world, media scholar Sut Jhally offers a blistering analysis of commercial culture's inability to let go of reactionary gender representations.By looking beyond advertising as a medium that simply sells products, and beyond analyses of gender that tend to focus on either biology or objectification, The Codes of Gender offers important insights into the social construction of masculinity and femininity, the relationship between gender and power, and the everyday performance of cultural norms.

Background : Young Masculinities is a series of film screenings and discussions conducted by Project Motley. The films explore diverse subjects like masculine and feminine ideals in advertising, pedagogy of violent masculinity in films and music, how ideas of masculinities interact with the experience of fatherhood and what dating and relationships look like when young men and women commit to working towards equality in their relationships. It is hoped that each screening will be followed by an honest and open discussion, with men of all ages about their experiences with these institutions and their opinions of what they saw on the screens. The events are open to general public. However, young men and their partners/ parents/aunts & uncles/ teachers are particularly encouraged to attend.

About the Organization: Project Motley is an interdisciplinary arts initiative whose aim is to encourage critical thought.
