As part of "India and the World: International Experience and National Policy" series.

While many developing countries (e.g., China) have adopted urbanization as a major driver of growth, India, on the other hand, has a political rhetoric against such a policy. It would be interesting to note how this perspective difference plays out in the specifics of the Indian situation.
Speaker:
Pronab Sen holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Johns Hopkins University, an MBA from George Washington University, and a B.A. (Hons.) from St. Stephen’s College. After working for three years as a management consultant and twelve years in academics, he joined the Government of India as Economic Adviser, Department of Electronics in 1990. He spent fifteen years in the Planning Commission as Principal Adviser, Perspective Planning, and as its first Principal Economist. During this period, he prepared three Five Year Plans. He was also appointed the first Chief Statistician of India in 2007. He is presently the Chairman of the National Statistical Commission and Country Director of the International Growth Centre.

T. N. Ninan is currently Chairman of Business Standard Ltd and has held leadership positions in India Today, The Economic Times and Businessworld. His Saturday column ‘Weekend Ruminations’ has a large following. He has been the President of the Editors Guild of India and author of The Turn of the Tortoise. He serves on the boards of several non-profit organizations including one that supports public spirit in journalism.
