Event Description : "Roots & Shoots" a musical dialogue between an Indian classical music trio and German jazz trio
The sextet will be touring India (Delhi, Chennai, Trivandrum, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune) in November 2015.
In 2013 Hindol Deb, a sitar player from India and Sebastian Gramss, a double bass player and composer from Germany, came together to create an engaging and challenging Indo-German music project that is driven by an intense mutual curiosity, their friendship as artists and by a deep interest in a meaningful cultural partnership.
The collaboration aims to update and redefine misleading common perceptions that Indians and Germans have of each other, which are sometimes defined by clichés. These stereotypes are filtered and transmitted through the medium of music for a broad and active exchange with new content.
While the intercultural perspective is nuanced in music because of its nature of direct interaction, compatibility between the essential nature and mind set of the two cultures at first seemed difficult.
However, having worked together closely the musicians and composers, Hindol Deb and Sebastian Gramss discovered through their long-term collaboration broad overlaps in the music of the two cultures and several points of contact. Together with Amit Mishra and Paras Nath from India and Matthias Muche and Erwin Ditzner from Germany, they have explored different cultural roots and traditions (ROOTS) and the ensuing new fruits and sprouts (SHOOTS) lead to a unique artistic exchange: ROOTS & SHOOTS. These six award winning musicians have come together to move beyond World Music and Fusion clichés to explore new musical grounds combining aspects of both musical traditions.
