Event Description : Project Motley presents "Tough Guise 2" film screening & discussion as part of 'Young Masculinities' series.
In this film, Jackson Katz looks at violent, sexist, and homophobic messages boys and young men routinely receive from entertainment industries with the aim of challenging the myth that being a real man means putting up a false front and engaging in violent and self-destructive behaviour. The follow up discussion will look to draw upon examples from within the local context to see the relevance of these ideas in the context of the audience.

Background : Young Masculinities is a series of film screenings and discussions conducted by Project Motley. The films explore diverse subjects like masculine and feminine ideals in advertising, pedagogy of violent masculinity in films and music, how ideas of masculinities interact with the experience of fatherhood and what dating and relationships look like when young men and women commit to working towards equality in their relationships. It is hoped that each screening will be followed by an honest and open discussion, with men of all ages about their experiences with these institutions and their opinions of what they saw on the screens. The events are open to general public. However, young men and their partners/ parents/aunts & uncles/ teachers are particularly encouraged to attend.
About the Organization: Project Motley is an interdisciplinary arts initiative whose aim is to encourage critical thought.
