Sunit Tandon introduces a video recording of a live production from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, of Donizetti’s sparkling comedy with some of the most spectacularly gymnastic vocal writing for the leading soprano and tenor. The simple story concerns Marie, a young orphan girl raised by an entire army regiment as their mascot and her love for Tonio, who joins the regiment just to be near her. Complications and comedy ensue when her true identity is discovered...
