Event Description :
"Not my Life - Artist respond" a group art show by Dominique Gribot-Carroz & Kanchan Chander

IN CONCERT WITH: Director and Oscar nominee Robert Bilheimer

About the Show : “Not my life” is a platform that will use artwork to raise awareness about global human trafficking, particularly of children. Our approach is inspired by the documentary “Not My Life” -  first film to depict the cruel and dehumanizing practices of human trafficking and modern slavery on a global scale. In line with the vision of Robert Bilheimer, Not My Life director and Oscar-nominee, we believe raising drastically social awareness on human trafficking will be decisive to mobilize further citizens, leaders and decision-makers to fight this human predicament globally.

Our first goal is to start collaboration with Alliance Francaise to launch an impactful art festival on human trafficking. The event would feature work from artists - painter, sculptor and an Indian dancer, and could also show Not My Life documentary in English.  The collaboration will build further momentum on the awareness campaign that Not My Life / India team has been conducting in India  since 2014. Equally, the project team plans to put paintings and sculptures on sale, and to donate related proceeds1 (50% to 100%, subject to tax) to support Not My Life awareness-raising actions in India. Should the approach be successful, we could repeat it and involve new artwork or artists at each event.

Background : Not My Life  is a 2011 American independent documentary film about human trafficking  and contemporary slavery. The film was written, produced, and directed by Robert Bilheimer, who had been asked to make the film by Antonio Maria Costa executive director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Artists Kanchan Chander & Dominique Gribot-Carroz are presenting art works which will not only help you to relate with such a sensitive issue but at the same time will will build further momentum on the awareness campaign that Not My Life / India team has been conducting in India  since 2014. Equally, the project team plans to put paintings and sculptures on sale, and to donate related proceeds to support Not My Life awareness-raising actions in India.

Brief Background On The Film - About Not My Life 4
Released in 2012, Not My Life (notmylife.org) is the first film to depict the cruel and dehumanizing practices of human trafficking and modern slavery on a global scale.

Filmed on five continents, in a dozen countries, Not My Life takes viewers into a world where millions of children are exploited, every day, through an astonishing array of practices including forced labor, domestic servitude, begging, sex tourism, sexual violence, and child soldiering.

"Human traffickers are earning billions of dollars on the backs and in the beds of our children,"  says the film's director, Oscar nominee Robert Bilheimer, "and yet not nearly enough people know this is happening. We have a huge responsibility, right now, to tell the truth and share the truth until the public discourse on this issue is ongoing and universal.”

Robert Bilheimer: Robert Bilheimer, President of the nonprofit Worldwide Documentaries, is one of the most influential documentary filmmakers working in the world today. In 1989, Robert was nominated for an Academy Award for Cry of Reason, a feature-length documentary that profiles the South African anti-apartheid leader Beyers Naude. Since that time, he has made carefully crafted documentary films on a wide range of social, cultural, and humanitarian concern.
Over the past ten years, Robert has made two films-- A Closer Walk, about the global AIDS epidemic, and Not My Life, about human trafficking, that have been hailed as “masterpieces,” and seen by millions of people across a very broad set of global demographics.
International film critics and human rights leaders have focused on both A Closer Walk and Not My Life as examples of Robert’s ability to make documentary films that are at once powerful depictions of tragic human rights issues, and yet are also “beautiful" and “redemptive” works of art. This combination, critics have said, makes him unique among major documentary filmmakers working today. Mike McCarthy, the Senior Producer of CNN International’s Freedom Project, which aired Not My Life in 2011, called the film a “seminal work.”
Veteran Gannet film critic Jack Garner called the same film “an artful motion picture, and a beautifully told story of suffering and compassion.”Not My Life recently received a major distribution grant from the Swedish International Development Agency, and will have its International Premiere in Brussels on October 18, the European Union’s Human Trafficking Day.

Not My Life / India
In response to this mandate, in February, 2014, working with Indian partners, the small team at Worldwide Documentaries began to develop the Not My Life / India project. Building on relationships established in India ten years ago during the production and distribution of A Closer Walk, Worldwide’s film about the global AIDS epidemic, Not My Life / India was conceived as a strategic response to a harsh reality: there are approximately 14 million slaves in India, far more than anywhere else in the world, and every six minutes a child in India disappears into a life of bondage, unspeakable hardship, and physical and mental torture. Despite growing

Worldwide Documentaries and it’s not-for-profit Indian partners believe that Not My Life / India represents an exceptional opportunity for donors wishing to align themselves with the Indian people in the war that is being waged on their children by human traffickers and slaveholders. More details on Not My Life / India and related funding needs could be provided upon request.
