Event Description :
Embassy of Switzerland in India presents "Quantum" dance based on the concept of kinetic movement in particle physics by Swiss choreographer Gilles Jobin

To mark the “Year of Swiss Innovation in India 2015-16”, the Embassy of Switzerland along with Pro Helvetia Swiss Art Council and swissnex India presents Quantum an innovative dance performance by Gilles Jobin, choreographer of international acclaim collaborated withGerman visual artist Julius von Bismarck for the lighting set and scenography. The performance will take place in Bengaluru, Chandigarh and Delhi and would be followed by lecture by Gilles Jobin about his experience at CERN and his work and researches.

In Delhi, the performances will be followed by lectures by Gilles Jobin.

Quantum is a perfect example of the kind of mutual inspiration that can happen when artists and scientists work with one another. Quantum is a quivering, throbbing performance that celebrates the dance of the universe through the movement of elementary particles. A magnetic show, both literally and figuratively, where six dancers constantly attract and repel each other, as if caught in a force field, which all matter is subjected to. Fascinatingly fluid diagonals, paths that cross, light touches, all executed with perfect control as the dancers follow their own trajectory with its varying geometry.

After the performance of the 4th December in Delhi: Prof. Florencia Canelli (Zurich University) and Prof. B. Ananthanaryan Chairman Centre for High Energy Physics IISc Bangaluru will join Gilles Jobin on the stage and discuss the relation between dance and science. An open discussion with the public will follow.

On the 5th of December, Prof. Florencia Canelli will be alone with Gilles Jobin on the stage to interact with him and with audience on the relation between dance and science. Quantum takes the quark as muse, fusing choreography and installation art into an ode to subatomic randomness where six dancers vibrate, scatter, and whirl beneath a gyrating quartet of industrial lamps, programmed to respond to the slightest movement, while Carla Scaletti’s soundscape from particle collision data provides the sonic ether.

Inspired by a three month residency at the CERN (European Organisation for Nuclear Research) and his discussions with the physicists, the choreographer Gilles Jobin went on to create a captivating show, based on random trajectories and extremely precise repetitive movements. The rumblings of the Large Hadron Collider – LHC, captured by the composer Carla Scaletti and the lumino-kinetic installation of the German artist, Julius von Bismarck, accompany the dancers and reinforce the feeling of being thrust into the very heart of life.
