Event Description : "Words Unspoken" A solo show by artist Bani Pershad.
Bani’s paintings juxtapose an understanding of the fluidity of emotion and the visual vibrancy that only a dancer can have. Each canvas reflects an understanding of life in terms that go beyond language and imagery into her unique world of symbolism. There is a far greater fidelity to essences and presences than to the traditional notion of form. Most striking in her art, though, is the sheer unpretentious, innocence and truthfulness that we see in her everyday demeanor. Layers.Layers of acrylic, a stunning use of color, a vast spectrum of subjects, characters and stories, make her work a diverse and consistently engaging set of frames.
When Bani began working on large canvas the process of paint takes over. On large canvases six feet in height she uses her colours boldly from purple to pink, browns to gold, black to blood red. There is a pervasive mood, a lightness of spirit or darkness that creates the ambiance. Purple is an unusual colour to saturate a canvas, but being one of her favorites it is used in The City (2014) in two distinct shades. Three huge blocks of city towers are silhouetted against the darkening night sky. She will admit to the fact that she works with impulse, without preconception & with intuition. In her experiments she used the spatula, the sponge, the roller, turpentine, rarely the brush and that often to achieve special effects.
Her drawings are impressive, and they speed her resolve to move quickly through different techniques. Several artists in the past and not only in this country have found strength and variation through exploring their ideas and skills on paper. A wide range of drawings suggest Bani’s search for innovation.
I don’t imagine the Forms. I feel the colours and I feel the mood – of all my experiences of the life I have lived and that I could not live but can imagine.. I don’t preconceive the forms – it is the process (of painting) that takes over - Says Bani
Both the strength and weakness of Bani Pershad’s work lies in its spontaneity. It’s weakness lies in the search for essential meaning. The meanings can and do change, depending on the experience and views of the spectator. Interpretations of any of her works could be very different, as is seen from my responses to her work, and her comments. The strength lies in the surprises she holds for us, approaching themes with very different techniques. The strength lies in her confidence to explore, and the imagination to fly.
