Event Description : Opera At Habitat Series "Ruggiero Leoncavallo's Pagliacci" Italian Opera film screening with English subtitles. 
Sunit Tandon introduces a video recording of a live production from the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, of one of the most popular short operas in the repertoire: Leoncavallo's late 19th century masterpiece, Pagliacci (meaning Clowns), starring the great Luciano Pavarotti and Teresa Stratas. Life and art are intertwined as this gritty and tragic tale of fatal jealousies in a travelling troupe of actors, based on a real-life case, in which a middle-aged actor murdered his unfaithful wife onstage during a performance. The protagonist, Canio, appears in the white-face guise of a clown in the performance, and this is a classic example of the 'tears of the clown' with the highlight being one of the great tenor arias of all time "Vesti la giubba"...
