Event Description : `What The Eyes Can See’ An exhibition of paintings by Kota Neelima
Medium : Oil on Canvas
Artist and author Kota Neelima’s fifth solo exhibition, `What The Eyes Can See,’ is a re-articulation of Katha and Kena Upanishad that raise critical questions about the reality of what the eyes can see and also what the eyes know. The series explores the layers of reality available to be comprehended in the world, not just from the present and the past, but also from the future yet to come. The exhibition contains 28 impressionist-abstract paintings that use symbols from nature, like trees, roots, sky and birds.
The perception of eyes goes beyond just the vision of the scene they behold, and includes the perception of all the past and all the possible futures of that scene. This is especially portrayed in the central painting of the series, titled, `What the Eyes Can See,’ with a complex tree whose branches and roots are intricately connected to represent continuity. The tree is more than the tree of life, it is the tree of return, the tree of immortality. The Katha Upanishad contemplates the question, what is beyond right and wrong, cause and effect, past and future. The search for answers is represented in the painting titled, `The
Search,’ as the journey of the moon and darkness that precedes understanding and illumination. The painting, `Leaves of White’ is set against a dramatic sky, coloured with karma, and a tree with white leaves that remains unaffected and pure.
