Event Description : "SHŪNYA" an exhibition of artworks by well known Textile artist Neha Puri Dhir.
This art is born out of a constant process of discovery. It is almost impossible to replicate the outcome of resist dyeing techniques. Exploring the variations of these techniques, each fabric manifests into a unique marvel. The process is highly controlled but with a painterly approach. The nuances of stitch resist are seen as subtle perforations on the final fabric surface. Hand woven silk sourced from various weaving clusters across India is finely stitched and dyed multiple times. The patterns are meticulously planned and the colours require precise chemistry. Therefore, each step adds complexity to the artwork and the end result is often unpredictable. Finally the mystery gets revealed when the fabric is unfolded, making every piece of cloth a pleasant surprise. The visual language of this art reflects many world cultures. The fabrics have echoes of many age-old resist dye techniques, including Shibori from Japan, Bandhej from India, and Adire’ from Nigeria. Somewhere, this technique has given birth to a specific aesthetic, which is a bold interplay of forms, high on texture and an unpredictable interaction of colors. The art is also inspired by the innumerable possibilities offered by geometry. To the artist, geometry represents the bridge between art and mathematics. The language of dots and lines help her realise the complicated concepts in a simple yet magical way. The artworks represent a serendipitous harmony of structure and fluidity, intention and chance, perfection and imperfection, craft and art, freedom and control.
About the Artist – Neha Dhir Puri
Neha Puri Dhir was born and brought up in Hardwar, Uttarakhand.
She got selected at NID, Ahmedabad in the year 2002 and it was then that she realised it is going to be an uphill task ahead. However, her moment of truth arrived when she visited the small village of Paithan in Maharashtra where their group was exposed to Paithani sari weaving. The intricacy and diligence of the weavers left a lasting impression on her heart and before the visit ended, she knew it was going to be textile design for her. For her final year graduation project at NID, she got selected to work with Himmatsingka Seide Ltd., Bangalore. After her graduation at NID, she pursued a masters degree under a scholarship at Politecnico De Milano, Italy and later another one year masters program at Central Saint Martins, London.
Neha's ever inquisitive mind was always keen on exploring and venturing into new fields. She moved to Delhi before London and joined Asian Heritage Foundation to work with Shri Rajeev Sethi on a World Bank funded project called 'Jiyo'. She has taught at various design institutes across the country like NID (Ahmedabad), NIFT (Gandhinagar), DJ Academy (Coimbatore), Kala Raksha Vidyalaya (Kutch), Pearl Academy (Jaipur), MRID (Vadodara), MSU (Vadodara) etc. Her tryst with resist dyeing started when she attended a two-week Shibori workshop at NID in 2004 with Yoshiko Wada and Jack Lenor Larson.
