Sunit Tandon introduces a video recording of a live production from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, of Richard Strauss' provocative adaptation for the operatic stage of Oscar Wilde's scandalous play originally written in French. Set around 30 A.D., this is the horrifying tale of Salome, King Herod's step-daughter. Herod has married her mother, Herodias, but looks lustfully on Salome. Salome is intrigued by the Prophet Jokanaan (John the Baptist), who is kept imprisoned in a well, but he spurns her advances. Herod promises to grant any wish of hers if she will dance for him. Salome dances the famous Dance of the Seven Veils and demands the head of Jokanaan on a silver platter...
