Event Description : Sanskriti – Madhobi Chatterji Fellowship presents Kathak Recital By Vishal Krishna from Varanasi, disciple of the late Smt Sitara Devi and recipient of the Sanskriti – Madhobi Chatterji Memorial Fellowship 2015
Vishal Krishna, an accomplished Kathak dancer was born in 1991 in the illustrious family of Acharya Sukhdev Maharaj. At the tender age of 3, he started his dance training under the tutelage of his grandmother Kathak Queen Sitara Devi. Through the years, he also learnt from his father, a respected Kathak exponent, Pt Mohan Krishna and Pt Ravi Shankar Mishra.
He is the nephew of Natraj Gopi Krishna. Vishal Krishna’s Kathak has all the unique flavours of the Benaras culture, from the Shiv Vandana with one legged stances to the squatting in full split on the sama. Like a cherubic little Krishna enjoying himself, his pirouettes, poses and the insouciance of rhythmic brilliance with virile and vigorous movements make him a promising young dancer. His performances are characterized with grace, bravura and showmanship.
Apart from being a Dancer of repute, he teaches students and choreographs pieces for audiences both in India and abroad. His repertoire and performances have earned him several prestigious awards including the Shringar Mani 2007 and the Pt Birju Maharaj Sangeet Samriddhi Samman.
He currently resides in Benaras and teaches in Kathakashray, the school he founded in memory of his grandmother Late Sitara Devi.
