Smt. Sreya Guha, IAS, Director General, National Archives of India, Cordially invites you to the sixth lecture in the series by Dr. Narayani Gupta, Professor of History, (Retd.), University of Delhi and Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi on 'Hunting for towns in the archives'

Urban history as a discipline rather than merely an antiquarian interest, developed in Britain and Europe from the 1950s. In India, historians were more preoccupied with the periods of imperial consolidation, then with economic history and that of nationalism. Local studies did not get attention till the 1970s.
One of the challenges of urban history is that its borders are porous, and it borrows from sociology, demography, architectural history and geography. In the archives it is hidden sometimes in unlikely files or categories. Records at the local level are still not in a shape that is friendly to the researcher. The reward is that it creates a strong bond between researcher and subject.
