Event Description : "Trysts with Nature" an exhibition of paintings, drawings and watercolors by Sabia.

For over two generations now, the Indian woman has sat on the cusp of a feudal society still furning modern. Today had arrived, but now without carrying its yesterday wrapped with all its burden's just under the sleeve. In this role, she can ride the dichotomies and dilemmas of our age as a single rider on two unfamed horses. Or Sabia can be that cusp-woman, a car driving Raziq Sultan of our times.
Her canvas showed its talent quite early. Without changing styles. Her Ramachandranesque route taught her an unadulterated love of colour. Her golden-yellows and reddish-oranges, create a spacious luminosity from the backdrop where her women enter and stay. The boughs with blossoms connect her nayikas with nature as if in a studio of their own calm. Sabia derives and renews her creative energy from nature and she endows it to her painterly characters. They, in turn, share it with the viewers.
Nature, in Sabia's work, becomes that invisible blotting paper which absorbs the imbalances that Indian society creates for its women. The Simal or Red Silk Cotton free becomes that blotting paper in this series. Her female protagonists lose themselves and become one with the leaf and blossom of Sabia's palate. They talks to peacocks and house sparrows, squirrels and butterflies to return refreshed/cleansed/absolved of whatever their world keeps inflicting on them.
Sabia Uses 108, the Universal holy number to aesthetic advantage. Its root lies in the number 9 which is indestructible: it divides and multiplies by itself to remain 9. In the table of 9, it always remains 9.9 x 2 = 18 (1+8 = 9), 9 x 3 = 27 (2+ 7=9)... 9 x 9 = 81 (8+1=9). The numbers 108 emerge from 9 x 12 = 108, and again 14-0+8=9| The flowers in Sabia's trees are 108 as the rosaries in the prayer beads of all religions are always 108. Perhaps the spiritual intent of the paintings is also accentuated by this holy underlay in planning the works?
Wherever these canvases will hang, they will bring indoors that window of outdoor hope with them into the Urban spaces from where gardens have now escaped. Seeing them, both the women and men shall put away the ugly bristles of their daily grind. Sabia, who has also recorded nature and its creatures in other mediums, shall be the balm and therapy for our overcrowded horizons. Her drawings are not like the precise Company School ones but tinged with a naively that takes them away from the photographic likeness of 18"and 19" century botanists' and zoologists' works, whether they beared rose or a blackbuck.
