Event Description : Pride in “PRIMITIVISM" Solo exhibition of artworks by Rabin Bhattacharjee.
The artist draws his inspiration for this exhibition from the works of Gauguin, Picasso, & Matisse on tribal arts of Africa, Oceania and North America, worked during the early part of the 20th Century.
Rabin, during his early life as a fine artist was moved by the rich tribal art form of the North Eastern states of India, in particular Nagaland.
Recognizing the importance of upholding tribal art form of the North Eastern states of India and the relative lack of serious research devoted to relate itsaffinity to modern art, Robin dedicated his life, studying the parallelisms that exist between the Tribal and the Modern art forms. Robin began melding the perceptual realism of impressionism with flat decorative effects and stylized formsoriginating from North East Indian Tribal Art.
Few exhibits from the outcome of such research are portrayed in the impressionistic & surrealistic paintingsof this exhibition.
Entitled, Pride in "PRIMITIVISM" which opens on August 5th and runs through August 8th, 2015, is perhaps the first ever art exhibition in Delhi toexhibit the affinity of the North East Indian Tribal Art to the Modern Art.

Globally, this shift away from the purely perceptual to a more conceptual style gathered momentumsince mid-20th Century, fueled at least in part by the ever-increasing availability of African and Oceanic tribal objects in centers of artistic activity such as Paris, and by pioneer modernists' "discovery" of the beauty and complexity of objects previously considered mere curiosities.

About the artist : Late Artist Shri Rabindranath Bhattacharjee, known as Rabin, was born in 1941 in West Bengal. He gained his Diploma in Fine Arts with 1st class from the Govt. College of Art and Craft, Calcutta in 1964.
He worked for over 33 years in the North Eastern states, particularly in Nagaland, and was the former Director of North East Zone Cultural Centre, GOI, Dimapur. Rabin, during his work life, gathered immense knowledge in Tribal Art and Culture of the North East Indian states, and was also close to contemporary art movement in India. He created the State Museum- A museum of Art and Culture in Nagaland single handedly. This is considered to be one of the best Tribal Art Museums in India.
For his outstanding contribution to the world of Indian Art, he was bestowed by several awards by India’s most reputed art institutes such as “The Lalit Kala Academy” and several other art institutes of international repute.
Rabin’s works have been exhibited at several museums across the Indian subcontinent and in the State Houses of many Indian States. In the International arena, his works have been exhibited at several prominent institutes and museums across the world such as the Goite Institute, Munich, Germany. His works are also in collection with many private art collectors in India and abroad.
Apart from being a professional fine artist, Rabin was also bequeathed by the Indian Government with the responsibility of presenting India’s rich Art and Culture in the International arena. Doing so, he had led Indian Cultural Troupes to European and West Asian nations like France, Italy, Belgium, The Netherlands, Syria etc. He has delivered lectures on Tribal Art and Culture of North Eastern India at such festivals.
He left for his heavenly abode on 2nd Jan 2014.
