Event Description : IGNCA Film Circle presents "Deva Vadyangal : Temple Instruments of Kerala" film screening.
A film that documents the musical traditions of temples in Kerala. The sound emitted by the musical instruments in temples for various ritualistic and ceremonial purposes is explored in this film. It touches upon the lesser known temple instruments of Kerala like Maddalam (a drum made out of the wood of the jackfruit tree), Tayambaka Kompu, Kuzhal (a traditional large shehnai, has a very shrill and penetrating tone) and Panca Vadyam like Sudha Maddalam, Edakka, Kompu, Elathalam. It traces the Guruvayur tradition and examines the Travancore School in which traditional instruments are played and taught. The documentary explores the age-old tradition of playing these instruments.
Musical tradition of Kerala: The music of Kerala has a long and rich history. Songs formed a major part of early Malayalam literature, which traces its origin to the 9th century. With the development of music in the region, different branches were formed out of it.
