Event Description : "Navakalevara" Film screening.

About the film: The documentary is on the rare event of new embodiment of Lord Jagannatha and his siblings, Balabhadra and Subhadra, of Puri, Orissa. The icons of Lord Jagannatha and his companions in Jagannaatha temple are made of Neem wood. Ritualistically, these idols are changed after an interval of twelve or nineteen years depending upon the secret protocols followed by the temple from the time immemorial. This special event of Lord Jagannatha and his siblings is called Navakalevara or the new embodiment.

Navakalevara: The idols are changed after a certain period of time. But the ritual of this transformation is very sacred and followed by a number of strict protocols scripted in Sanskrit on the palm leaves and is kept in the temple. Its access is limited to the head priest of the temple only. This ritual takes place only in that particular year when the month Ashada (June-July) happens to be an intercalary month (Double Asadha or two months of Asadha), which means when one lunar month of Ashadha is followed by another lunar month of Aashadha.
