Event Description : "Monumental" A photographic representation of the monuments of Delhi in an abstract minimalist form by Ahmed Firoz
The series “Monumental” is all about Delhi’s heritage being seen from different angles. With minimum details and unique perspectives, in both monochrome and color, Firoz brings out a series of photographs with the subjects filled with mysteries. The photographs inside and also outside of some of the very well known monuments of Delhi such as the Qutab Minar, Humayun’s Tomb and Safdarjung Tomb focus on areas and objects which are so much the integral parts of these beautiful and massive structures, yet escape the eyes of the visitors and not paid the attention they deserve. There are passing moments of time with human presence which are individually not recorded but all of them put together every day bring out the intricate relationship of the people with them. Above all, there are more to simple beauty and memorable work of art, much of which are to be felt than merely seen in the totality of these monumental creativity. This series of photographs have many stories to tell and, may be, not all of them have been told so far. These are left to the viewers’ perceptions and judgments to find new threads. The relationship between the past and the present in this changing world requires to be redefined and strengthened continuously with dynamic interpretation of the art loving people of Delhi. After all, these are Delhi’s identity and pride. These are heart and soul of the people of Delhi.
Firoz presents this series in minimalist style for which he is well known with subtle interplay of lights and shadows on the one hand and the people and the objects on the other.
About Dr. Ahmed S. Firoz : An economist by profession and known worldwide for his work on energy, metals and natural resources Ahmed Firoz finds some time out to take his camera to capture lives on streets, bring out minute colorful details of nature and find delicate interplay of light and shadows and focus on objects which tell subtle and intense stories which are intense and relevant to the time we are living in. Apart from documenting lives in this rapidly changing world, his overall body of work presents reality seen from his own unique perspective bringing out the intricate relationship between people and the surroundings. His works allow for a variety of interpretations and he does not believe there cannot be another view different from his own on his works of art. His photographs are aesthetically pleasing and mysterious but at times carry strong messages to challenge contemporary societal or economic values of our time. The core of his photography strongly depicts the rapidly changing worldly relationships between people and the material world. An expressionist by nature , Firoz is not identified with any specific genre of photography and just believes in the artistic value of his work. His work on a wide range of subjects has been appreciated worldwide.
Firoz has had several photo art exhibitions so far on a large number of subjects .
Firoz studied Economics for his MA, M.Phil and Ph.D. at India’s prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He is heading an important economic and technical research organization related to the steel and mining industries to advise the Indian government on policy and strategic matters.
