Event Description : "Flight to Freedom: Harmony Through Synthesis" an exhibition of Chigiri-E works by Jyotirmoy Ray.

Japanese art form Chigiri-E is being exhibited in Delhi for the very first time. Chigiri-É is a paper art created in the collage style by joining torn pieces of paper. It can be best summarized through Aristotle’s quote- ‘The whole is greater than the sum of its parts’.

The conventional view is that this art is as old as 'paper is'. As per a popular fable, an artist unified some fragmented bits of paper after World War II to depict hope. Chigiri-E evoked people to revive by knitting the lost threads of their lives together.

Rajeev Lochan, Director, National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) mentioned ‘given the present situation of mankind’s overuse and abuse of nature’s bounty, the works provoke a certain yearning for peaceful balance and co-existence.’

Chigiri-É is the artist's impression of hope that takes the flight to freedom - not by rejecting the shattered ugliness, but by seeking delight in re-creating a sense of harmony through synthesis.

About the artist: Jyotirmoy Ray (31st Dec 1933) is a Delhi-based artist specialising in the Japanese Chigiri-É style of cut-paper art.
A steel technologist from Carnegie Tech, USA, Ray formalised his artistic skill in the evening classes of the Department of Fine Arts, Pittsburgh University that he joined in 1957.

As advancement of career opened the gates of global travel, Ray used every opportunity to make sketches of hills, valleys, seashores and watersheds with their trees, birds and animals, along with cityscapes and people. He used even his travel time in airports, piers, trains and tube-rails to make numerous sketches of his co-passengers. Happily, he was married to an artist, Sita Ray, from whom he received constant guidance to enrich his artistic comprehension.

His final professional posting was in Japan. From a friend, he came to know of a technique called Chigiri- É, and in 2007, he made his first Chigiri-É piece. Over the years he developed his own technique by shearing instead of tearing and by using more of glossy papers sourced from Origami paper, newspapers, fliers and cast-away magazines and less of Washi. His paintings are spontaneous and he never draws even a basic sketch.

The bulk of his creation, numbering more than sixty pieces, was accomplished between the years 2008 and 2012. This intense creativity elevated him to a state of spiritual freedom that somewhat ameliorated his inconsolable grief after his wife passed away in 2007.

He held his first collage exhibition in the Chigiri-É style in the 'Leaf Gallery' in Kobe, Japan in 2011. He showed again in 2014 at the same venue, when some of his watercolours, pastels and sketches were also exhibited. On both occasions, the technologist cum artist received befitting praise.
