Event Description : The Nepal Exhibition - exhibition-cum-sale of photographs by Kanishka Prasad in aid of earthquake victims.

On the 12th of May 2015, at 12:50 in the early afternoon Nepal was jolted by a massive earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter Scale with its epicentre between the historic capital Kathmandu and the tourist lake town Pokhara. The quake that was felt across most of north and east India as well, left close to 9000 people dead and caused severe damage to homes and buildings. There has been serious damage to the rich architectural heritage of Nepal with many structures that had stood for hundreds of years being literally razed to the ground and now little more than piles of rubble. The Kathmandu Durbar Square, the Bhaktapur Temple Square (seen above), Dharahara Tower in Kathmandu to name but a few have all seen large scale devastation with iconic structures having been wiped out completely. To give a sense of the destruction, the high plinth from which the above photograph was pictured is all that remains today with the temple structure that stood atop it having been completely destroyed. Regular aftershocks were experienced in the country in the immediate aftermath with one of magnitude 5.6 being recorded as recently as the 16th of June in what has been a very volatile period of seismic activity in the entire region.
While the immediate period of rescue and relief may have wound down, the country and the numerous organisations working on the ground are now moving into a rehabilitation and rebuilding phase. At this juncture the country is still only coming to terms with the true extent of the damage and the kind of resources and effort that would be needed to rebuild.
As part of this ongoing endeavour, it was felt that a sustained assistance effort must be built here as well and hopefully this exhibition of images that I had taken in this beautiful country on two visits over the last 10 months, will prove to be but the first in a series of related activities. By putting up for sale, some of my prints I am hoping to be able to raise money to send to the Association of Youth Organisation Nepal (AYON) that is an umbrella association of youth organisations of Nepal and is extensively part of the relief and rebuilding effort on the ground. They are at present engaged primarily in rebuilding as well as safe dismantling of damaged or destroyed structures in various parts of Nepal mostly through the hard labour of youth volunteers. They are also setting up an accountability cell to monitor the efficient disbursement and use of the donations and resources that have come in from across the world to ensure that it reaches the intended beneficiaries.
