Yellowstone is the world’s first national park and one of the largest in the contiguous United States. The park is located at the headwaters of the Yellowstone River, from which it takes its historical name. Sprawling across volcanic plateaus Yellowstone contains more than 2 million acres of steaming geysers, crystalline lakes, thundering waterfalls and panoramic vistas out of which 96 percent of Yellowstone National Park is claimed by Wyoming, small portions of the park also lie in Montana (3%) and Idaho (1 %).
Home to a remarkable diversity of mammals, birds and fish, it’s one of the world’s foremost wildlife sanctuaries. Here, every season brings special wonders and each of the park’s varied landscapes offers a range of exciting experiences. The park is home to seven species of conifer trees, more than 1,000 species of native vascular plants, 67 species of mammals (including grizzly bears, wolves, bison, moose and elk) and more than 320 bird species!
