Event Description : "Perfectly-Imperfect" an exhibition of Ceramics by Leena Batra.
Artist's Comment : A chance happening, a pure accident, turned into a lifelong commitment. I worked on the wheel for a few years. It is fascinating, the movement and fluidity of wet clay, even the pot itself, ever so suggestive, the delicate foot, the full blown belly, the strong curve of the shoulder and the slender neck, such a tantalizing temptation.
For the last few years Leena has turned to Ceramic Sculptures. The urge to explore, to go beyond, to give shape to what her over-wrought yet fertile imagination wanted to express, attracted her to hand-building. Without abandoning the wheel she has merely changed her focus and direction and she continues to use it as a base for some of her sculptural works. Hand building is indicative of her interest in constructing richer and irregular forms with narrative quality. ‘Perfectly - Imperfect’, her new work is about this search for an unconventional balance where every form is unique and possesses its own personality.
Leena has always been looking for opportunities to explore new ranges of clay bodies and new techniques. Working with internationally well known potters during her frequent residencies in Jingdezhen, China, opened new horizons. It also afforded her a fantastic opportunity to work with porcelain – which she says has been a very gratifying experience.
With time her response to this process has been reflecting in her work. It is as though the inner urge to explore must find expression in something tangible - and when it does, there is a brief moment of fulfilment. Brief, because she is caught in the vortex again and again.
