Tagore and the Feminine : A Journey through Translations (Sage Publications 2015) Readings by Malashri Lal, writer and academic Dramatization and singing by Averee Chauray, Theatre, and Film personality.

Description on the book: The book is inspired by the celebrations of Rabindranath Tagore's 150th birth anniversary worldwide in 2011. Calling upon her years of work in womenss studies, editor, critic and translator, Malashri Lal presents her perception of Tagore's fascination with the 'feminine' in all its aspects His negotiations were deeply problematic for himself and his times, and continue to perplex his readers today. Perhaps for that reason, one tends to return repeatedly to those teasing and unforgettable portrayals in his fiction and poetry, song and philosophy. But readers have too long trusted Tagore's own rather simple ways of expressing his intuitively complex understanding of the feminine.

The book offers selections from Tagore's vast corpus with a perspective that seeks out references and allusions to highlight the debates on feminism and gender identity that remain implicit throughout his work, and are relevant today. There are surprisingly candid poems on the body and sensuality, clever play with mythology, deep empathy with rural poverty and woman's deprivation, exploration of the woman-nation equivalence, challenges to patriarchy while there are also tributes to woman's familial role.

Bionote: Malashri Lal is Dean of Colleges and Professor of English at the University of Delhi and has held senior administrative positions in the same university. Her academic specialization is in Women and Gender Studies about which she has eleven books. Among her acclaimed co-edited volumes are In Search of Sita: Revisiting Mythology (2009) and Chamba-Achamba: Women's Oral Narratives (Sahitya Akademi 2012). Her newest international publication is Tagore and the Feminine: A Journey through Translations (Sage 2015). As a recipient of several fellowships from the Fulbright, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Shastri-Indo Canadian Institute and the British Council, she has conducted research in prestigious institutions such as Harvard University, USA, and Bellagio, Italy.
