Event Description : LILA PRISM lecture "Language As Continuity" a talk by R. Cheran, poet.

Abstract : Ask a lost diaspora, what is born out of the loneliness of language?” — The retention and transmission of language in different social, cultural, political and historical settings is a complex and difficult effort. Tamil, as a linguistic and political identity, always invokes passionate responses and articulations in various parts of the world where Tamils inhabit a liminal, diasporic and territorial space. While the secular identity of Tamils is celebrated and the praise of Tamil language is ritualised, the quality of Tamil teaching, learning and usage of Tamil as a medium has sharply declined. The talk will centre around the attempts to preserve and continue Tamil language as a cultural and political marker in the Tamil diaspora in Europe and North America, and it will be argued that Tamil as a cultural continuum has literary, political and linguistic potential in the diaspora.
R Cheran is one of the most influential contemporary Tamil poets. A native of Jaffna, Northern Sri Lanka, he worked for the non-aligned English weekly Saturday Review in the 1980s and contributed to the creation of the Tamil newspaper Sarinihar in the early 1990s. He is now teaching at the Department of Sociology at the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada. His many publications span across the fields of multi-lingual poetry, literature, history, politics and culture.
Sasanka Perera, Professor and Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, South Asian University, New Delhi, will chair the lecture and moderate the discussion. His research interests include spatial politics and dynamics of urban experience in South Asia/Sri Lanka, issues of education, political violence, nationalism, politics of memory, interpretation of culture and the politics of visual arts. He edits Society and Culture in South Asia. He writes poetry, mostly in Sinhala, and he is also an amateur photographer.

Chair : Sasanka Perera, Professor and Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, South Asian University, New Delhi.
