Event Description : "Enemy of the State: Criminalising Dissent" a public lecture by Arun Ferreira.

Arun Thomas Ferreira was arrested on May 8, 2007 for allegedly being a naxalite and was incarcerated in Nagpur Central Prison for nearly five years. During those years he spent considerable time in the infamous 'Anda Cell' in solitary confinement before being released on bail in January 2012. He has been subsequently acquitted in all the 13 cases that were filed against him.

Mr. Ferreira is a political activist and has worked with different people’s movements across Maharashtra, including anti-displacement struggles, Dalit and Adivasi movements. He has powerfully recounted his prison experience in his book, ‘Colours of the Cage: A Prison Memoir.’

Building on his personal experience, Mr. Ferreira's lecture will reflect on India's violent criminal justice system in the context of naxalism and the manner in which it is used as a tool to crush dissent and demand conformity in the name of national security.
