Event Description : "Stitch your own Journal..." Art workshop by Nidhi Khurana.

“Reusing found materials is a form of alchemy.”
- Cas Holmes, textile artist
This FICA workshop is being organised in conjunction with the exhibition Thread currently on view at the Alliance Francaise. The show brings together three artists, Nidhi Khurana, Matthias Spiess and Priya Ravish Mehra, who have each explored the use of thread in their own individual yet highly creative ways.

In keeping with the theme of the exhibition we invite people to participate in a fun hands-on activity where we will design, stitch and bind our own journals.
we will explore two other formats; a simple book and an accordion book
use a sewing machine for speed stitching and designing the cover

explore an eco-friendly way to reuse and preserve little scraps of paper extending the lifetime of material that is fast being depleted around the world.

About the exhibition
The show titled Thread brings together the practices of Nidhi Khurana, Matthias Spiess and Priya Ravish Mehra, three artists whose exploration of thread as a medium has brought them together. Spiess, a Swiss artist, came to India for a residency funded by Christoph Merian Stiftung / IAAB, and facilitated by Pro Helvetia – Swiss Arts Council in 2012/13. The three artists became friends and discovered they shared similar artistic approaches expressed through different media and a common interest in re-interpreting traditional design and in recycling discarded materials. The thread linked their practice and helped them develop new work in conversation with each other.

About the Facilitator
Nidhi Khurana is a practicing artist and educator based in New Delhi. She completed her post-graduation in School of Arts and Aesthetics from the Jawaharlal Nehru University. She did her Bachelors in sculpture from M. S. University, Vadodara. Her practice engages with the aesthetic and formal possibilities of mixed media as an act of constant rupture and mending, providing a nuanced understanding of creativity as a process of doing and undoing, making and remaking.

Nidhi has worked at Welham Girls School, Dehradun teaching art to ISC students as well as developing an art curriculum for the primary and middle school. She has also developed art workshops at Scindia School Gwalior and Purkul Youth Development Society, Dehradun among others. She has conducted workshops at the NGMA for the Foundation of Indian Contemporary Art (FICA) and Habitat Centre New Delhi. She conducted an art workshop as a public event by The Wall People in Parque Mexico, Mexico City in May 2013. Most recently she undertook a three-month stint at a village school in Auroville where she developed and implemented an art curriculum for the Primary Section.
