Rani Lakshmibai is one of the most revered icons of the freedom movement in India and her heroic struggle against the British has been celebrated not only in song and legend but in numerous literary works.
The title under discussion, Rani Lakshmibai, the Valiant Queen of Jhansi was published in the Puffin Lives series, which includes many biographies of women and men who have been a source of inspiration in our country. It chronicles the life and times of the queen in a gripping narrative and draws a vivid portrait of a woman far in advance of her times.
Author, poet and translator, Deepa Agarwal writes for both children and adults and has over 50 books published. A frequent contributor to magazines and journals in India and abroad, she has edited and compiled several anthologies. Among other awards, she has received the N.C.E.R.T. National Award for Children’s Literature in 1993 for her picture book Ashok’s New Friends, while her historical fiction Caravan to Tibet was on the IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) Honour List 2008.Her work has been translated into several Indian and foreign languages. Recent titles include: The Game of Shadows (Scholastic India) and Chanakya, the Master of Statecraft (Penguin India) in the Puffin Lives series. A collection of retold stories The Wish Fulfilling Cow and Other Classic Indian Tales (Scholastic India) and a non-fiction How Many Steps to Lhasa? (National Book Trust) are forthcoming.
Deepa also researches children’s literature and has presented papers in many seminars and conferences both in India and abroad. She is active in reading promotion and is a resource person for National Book Trust, India, Scholastic India and Ratnasagar Publishers, conducting creative writing workshops and storytelling sessions.
