The wait is over. Yogendra Sethi whose shows are awaited with anticipation by art lovers, thanks to his fresh perspective and new ideas, is back with his latest exhibition of paintings. Nature is presented in his canvases with an imagination so vivid and fertile that the viewer is immediately caught in a fantastic world where strength of mountains and brilliancy of diamonds are visible. Each acrylic on canvas, which has always been his favourite medium, ostensibly reflects his personal love of nature and a deep sense of spirituality.
The current collection “Diamond Soul” brings his core philosophy and spirituality to the surface. Each painting depicts his mastery over his skills- that of positive feelings, philosopher, spiritual guru and an artist.
Yogendra, who hails from Indore, heart of India also happens to be an acclaimed Jewel designer. His fascination for painting started at an early age and he would paint landscapes in transparent watercolour whenever he had spare time. In fact almost every weekend was spent cycling and looking for that perfect spot to paint. “I could sit for hours with my textured paper and watercolour tubes”, he says about his budding passion. After obtaining a master’s degree in fine arts in 1973 from Indore School of Fine arts he went to Berkeley, California for an MBA. His landscapes too moved from traditional to contemporary and conceptual as he explored the vast expanse of nature in California, USA.
Later as he worked with colour gems and observed their qualities closely, an idea took seed from which was born a new form of art- very unique and thought provoking. Nature that he had loved to paint throughout his life, had taken on a new form of life in his paintings. The strokes, the lines, the colours were that of a mountain, rock or nature, but at the same time resembled human figure or a group of people- all dynamic, and active. Brilliant as a diamond, these prismatic forms speak to us, “make us wonder and give us energy, joy and positivity”, as he rightly puts it.
The Artist got into jewellery designing and created many masterpieces for various renowned brands, courtesy his passion for colours and design. Art pieces from his collection have been exhibited at art galleries across the world and several Bollywood divas and American television hosts like Sharon Osbourne, Melanie Brown and Oprah Winfrey have been spotted wearing his pieces.
About the Artist
Born in a reputed business family of Indore, Yogendra's academic career has been a unique amalgamation of arts and commerce. He earned a master's degree in Fine Arts from Indore School of Fine Arts and later went on to do his Master’s in Business Administration from Berkeley, California. It was in California that Yogendra was overwhelmed with the unsurpassed beauty of Berkeley Hills. And, he set to capture the natural wonders of California in a series of outdoor landscapes in transparent water colours. The breath-taking landscapes of California, thereafter, became the muse of this internationally acclaimed painter.
The artist in him seems to assuage the hardness of diamonds with his subtle exploits on the canvas, depicting the exhibits of nature. His expertise with “natural fancy colour diamonds” allowed him to master unusual prismatic forms. In fact, he was so smitten by these beautiful stones that for a brief stint he even worked as a gems dealer in the 1970s.
