Event Description : Opera At Habitat Series - Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier (The Knight of the Rose), over 2 days.
24th June - Act I (/75 mins) Dir.. Conductor: Carlos Kleiber. a live video film from the Vienna State Opera conducted by the legendary Carlos Kleiber. Der Rosenkavalier is famed for the beautiful music of the three female-voice roles which comprise its protagonists: Sophie, Octavian, and the Marschallin. This love triangle culminates in the exquisite trio and duet, which end the opera. The aristocratic Marschallin (wife of a Field Marshal) is having an extra-marital affair with her very young lover Count Octavian Rofrano while her husband is away. Her coarse cousin Baron Ochs wishes to marry the pretty young Sophie von Faninal, daughter of a rich bourgeois for her money. At the Marschallin's suggestion, Ochs has Octavian act as his Rosenkavalier to present the ceremonial silver rose that signifies a proposal of marriage to Sophie. But when Octavian meets Sophie, they fall in love at first sight. By a comic intrigue, they get rid of Ochs with the help of the Marschallin, who then yields Octavian to the younger woman. While it is a comic opera, Der Rosenkavalieralso operates at a deeper level. Conscious of the difference in age between herself and Octavian, the Marschallin muses in bittersweet fashion over the passing of time, growing old, and men's inconstancy.
