Event Description : Bruno Art group presents Israeli artist David Gerstein’s first solo show in India titled Poetic Mirror
Born in Jerusalem in 1944, Gerstein studied in Jerusalem, Paris, New York and London and started exhibiting his work in 1971. He uses a large spectrum of media such as wall sculptures, paper cuts, prints and photographs and other small objects. He is most famous for his large, Fauve-like outdoor installations, which are very much part of the Israeli landscapes.
Says the artist who is considered the pioneer of 3-D metal art: “My passion for colours always makes people inquire whether India helped determine my love for strong fresh colours which is so typical to the Indian culture. After all, the Mediterranean culture and heritage which we share with India brings us to the same strong sun and shadows. I'm sure India will look familiar to me from the very beginning. Some of my works involve a lot of details and are rich in colours which in recent years have disappeared from the art world trends.”
Says Motti Abramovitz of Bruno Art Group: “We are proud to presents for the first time in India a comprehensive exhibition of works by David Gerstein, the founder of the 3D Metal Art. We believe he is an artist who has brought art from the walls towards the viewers.”
Says Dr Alka Pande, curator: “When we think of art, we think of emotion, of evoking a response and great art crosses boundaries of class, culture and geographies. Gerstein’s work has a universal vibrancy and buoyancy to it. He takes painting and sculpture to a new level, in a way almost fusing the two. You could call his work, a wall based installation, a three dimensional painting or kinetic sculpture. And this is what I find exciting, that you cannot box him as a single medium artist. He is an artist who defies categorization, who carries with him a plethora of skills and a dynamism which is difficult to curtail. We will be showing his colourful, three dimensional arts works in both indoor and outdoor spaces at the Habitat Centre. The forms, shapes and colour palette compliment the organic environment of Joseph Allen Stein’s building of the Habitat Centre. The earth red of the fly ash bricks, and the greenery of the local trees and flowers are a perfect backdrop to highlight the beauty of the Gerstein’s colour palette and his three dimensional forms enrich the clean modern lines of Stein’s buildings.”
Among the works that will be on display during the show is the swirling 5th Avenue, a busy street scene inspired by the artist’s stay in New York.Happy Hours depicts the sensation of freedom overwhelming two bikers surrounded by a cloud of butterflies. The powerful Endless walkrepresents a multicoloured crowd of people walking along lines that form the infinity symbol. Gerstein’s works convey a sense of wonder and amusement at this fervour-ridden reality that is ours, and can be interpreted as a metaphor of life as a mad race. The Burning Lips pass on the feeling of softness of the lips or the sensation of its great sensitivity. Elegance is a comment about femininity and Peloton Wave is all about movement and the way the human figure is integrated with the mechanism of the bicycle. “Each image has its own story and solution.”
David Gerstein has exhibited his works in many parts of the world including Europe (Belgium, England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland), Canada, the United States, Brazil, Korea and Israel. In India, his works were shown at India Art Fair by the Bruno Art Group, which has galleries in Tel Aviv, Haifa (Israel), Singapore and the Caicos Islands.
