Event Description : Mushaira Jashn-e-Bahar – 2014.
Exploring ever new poetic horizons while presenting the best in age old traditions through the unique institution of mushaira, Jashn-e-Bahar Trust is ready with its new offering for the lovers of Urdu poetry in the capital. The much awaited international mushaira Jashn-e-Bahar, the country’s biggest non-official, non-political such event, will be held on the evening of Friday, April 4th Known for bringing new flavours of contemporary Urdu poetry to its audience, the mushaira, now in its 16th from across the globe and India. Urdu poetry from Turkey and Tajikistan will be showcased in India for the first time this year. A poet from Osaka, Japan, adds a surprising new dimension to modern Urdu poetry. And top poets from Pakistan will join their Indian counterparts to present their fresh takes on the times.
Japan’s Prof So Yamane teaches Urdu in Osaka, while Turkey’s Prof Dr Halil Toker is a known champion of the language. Tajikistan’s youthful poetess Malakhowa Zebunisso is extending the frontiers of the language in new lands. While top poet Fehmida Riaz, Rahana Roohi, Ajmal Siraj and Ahmed Salman will represent Pakistan, Eminent poets Wasim Barelvi, Javed Akhtar, Pt Gulzar Dehlvi and Manzar Bhopali will lead the Indian side. Popular Meeruthi and Nishtar Amrohvi will bring humour and satire to the audience. Eminent poet Mansoor Usmani will conduct the mushaira that represents the sweep of the language from Kashmir (represented by Tarannum Riyaz) to Deccan (represented by Agha Sarosh). Hon’ble Justice T S Thakur, the Supreme Court of India will be the Chief Guest. Member, Planning Commission, Dr Ms Syeda Saiyidain Hameed, will preside over the mushaira while Janab Tripurari Sharan, Director General, Doordarshan, will be the guest of Honour.
“It’s election season. Ranging from serious poetry to tanz-o-mizah (satire and humour), ghazal and nazm, the poets will present their takes on the concerns of the day as well on the everlasting concerns of the human heart. With its accent on promoting amity, mushaira Jashn-e-Bahar stands for our secular, syncretic culture best symbolised by Urdu,” says Kamna Prasad, Urdu activist and Founder of the non-profit Jashn-e-Bahar Trust. With eminent painter M F Husain’s work on the theme of Urdu poetry as backdrop, the mushaira celebrates the joy of season and the immortality of Urdu verse. “Every year, more than 5,000 people attend mushaira Jashn-e-Bahar. This is testimony not just for the popularity of the mushaira but also to the fact that Urdu, our beloved language, is very 2014, at Delhi Public School, Mathura Road. year, will see some scintillating poetry from a score of participants much alive and continues to resonate with the sensibilities of people of all ages,” says Kamna Prasad. This year the mushaira also travels to Patna, another dabistan (stronghold) of Urdu, she adds. The mushaira is organised with the support of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Delhi Public School, Mathura Road, Tata Services, Sulabh International Social Service Organisation, Takshila, M R Morarka Foundation, Overseas Infrastructure Alliance, RKBK Fiscal Services Pvt Ltd and Sun Foundation.
