Event Description : 'The Mughal Album: Cultures of Collecting' a talk by Prof Kavita Singh.
In this lecture Prof Kavita Singh will look at the phenomenon of the Mughal album ormuraqqa which brought together diverse paintings, drawings and calligraphies and bound them into a harmonious whole. Mughal paintings tend to be studied as isolated images - assuming for them a form of artistic autonomy that derives not from their original context, but from modern market forces, that cut up books and sell them page by page. When scholars have tried to undo this damage and study Mughal paintings in relation to the books of which they form a part, this usually do so to piece together the illustrations of narrative manuscripts, such as historical chronicles or poetic epics. It is only recently that the muraqqa or album has begun to be studied in some detail, though historically this was an extremely important form of Mughal book. Earlier opinion dismissed the muraqqa as a miscellaneous jumble, but recent scholarship has tried to see albums as coherent wholes. This session draws us into the world of Mughal muraqqas, showing their likely principles of organization and suggesting that they may be seen as a form of collecting, akin to the cabinets of curiosity that were being assembled in Europe at nearly the same time.
Prof Kavita Singh is Associate Professor at the School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University. Her research and teaching focus on the history of Indian painting and the history and politics of Indian museums.
