Event Description : 'Last Minute Exercise' Installation & Performance By Hannah Hurtzig / Mobile Academy Berlin.

Death may be equally inevitable for everyone, but it does not conclude each life in an identical way. The site of a last minute exercise happens in the fraction of time left to the self before death (or the extended process of dying), as it closes in on the conscious mind. Each exercise demonstrates the fact that though death may be a general theoretical problem - a question that haunts every philosophy - it nevertheless appears in various guises, changing form with time, place and situation. Concretely, there are as many kinds of death as there are lives, and there are as many ways of denial and expulsion to think what will happen in those last minutes.

The discursive installation will offer different mental and concrete exercises to be practiced in relation to the time of our death. Various specialists and practitioners have been invited from the fields of biology, medicine, veterinary science, philosophy, law, religious studies, forensics, art and anthropology to present their accounts and narratives on the last minutes of ones life.

These specialists will publicly present and debate different philosophical theories, scientific speculations, mythological and religious metaphors, discuss political scenarios and ethical conundrums and individual practices on the time of death, while also considering theories of metamorphosis and attending to martyrdom, meaning and meaninglessness. The discussions and debates will be open to the public, who will be free to enter into direct, face-to-face conversations with the invited specialists.

The diverse experiential, cultural and historical facets of death as a human phenomenon are shaped and perceived differently across the world, and have been seen and talked about differently across time. This event will embrace and stage that diversity. Even the seemingly straightforward question of "When, precisely, is one dead?" evokes a variety of answers. The answers vary with who answers, who is asking, and why the question is being asked.

Different scenarios, motifs and motivations are conceived as constituting thematic scaffolding for a set of discursive exercises to be practiced in relation to the time of death. The conversations unfolding as a part of 'Last Minute Exercise' offer conceptual building blocks from which we can fashion our own intellectual tool-kit for confronting the time of departure.

The Mobile Academy, Berlin, enacts staged performances and meetings as knowledge events. In the performative installations, the rhetoric and gestures of knowledge transfer are renegotiated, whether in dialogues or in old and new forms of assembly. Each project is dedicated to a specific subject, which is presented as a live event and then toured as a mobile archival unit. In the last years she is researching the zones between life and death and stages with an ensemble of scientists and academics the controversial discussions in life sciences. The Mobile Academy was founded in 1999 by Hannah Hurtzig.

Concept: Hannah Hurtzig | Project assistant and research: Arnika Ahldag | Stage: Florian Stirnemann and Sayantan Maitra Boka
