Saadat Hassan Manto’s

“Beemar”(About the Play)

In the play ‘Beemar’, ‘Kumar’ is not feeling well even after taking the medicines prescribed by the doctor. As he wants to get well as early as possible, he becomes an opportune lab testing animal for everyone around him and all his acquaintances practice their skills of prescribing the best remedy on him. Despite having cough, he is suggested to eat sour things like tamarind etc. reason being, ‘diamond cuts diamond’. He
is made to consume rotten vegetables and a lot of weird items. Even after doing variegated treatment, his condition deteriorates which frustrates him and he resolves to go for one single logical treatment. The play in a very humorous manner suggests that one should not be carried away by anybody’s suggestions.

Refund - Fritz Karinthy (About the Play)

The play refund is full of humour which deals with an extraordinarily ludicrous situation. The main character in the play is Wasserkopf. He is forty years old. He could not get any employment and wherever he went the people told him that he is fit for nothing and nothing worth while he has learnt when he was studying. One day he met a Lederer and asked him about his business. When the Lederer told him about foreign exchange and Hungarian money, he was not able to understand anything and started asking questions about foreign exchange to the Lederer. For which the Lederer said when you don’t know the silly thing what have you studied, you better go to your school and get your tuition fees back. Wasserkopf who was jobless and didn’t have any finance, this idea sounded something beneficial to him and so he went to the school where he studied once. When he asks for the refund of his tuition fees, the principal is shocked because after eighteen years he has come to the school thinking that he has learnt nothing worthwhile and so he can get his tuition fees back. The principal is in a peculiar situation now and h calls for an urgent meeting with all other staff members. They decided to keep a re-examination for Wasserkopf and agreed that whatever answers he gives weather it is right or wrong they will prove him right. One by one each teacher questions him and justified his wrong answer to be correct one and they mark him excellent. Though Wasserkopf gives wrong answers and use abuse words to each teacher, they don’t show their anger because they have to prove him as an excellent student to chuck him out.At least the mathematics master asks him a difficult question and an easy question. For the easy question he gives wrong answer and the master gets angry and says that he has failed on his examination so he should be given his tuition fees back. The master says that we have decided to give you your tuition fees back and now can you tell as the exact amount which we have to give you. Wasserkopf without knowing that he is going to fall into their trap gives them the list of exact amount. So the
mathematics master says that was my difficult question to give the exact amount of your tuition fees for which you gave the right answer. Now he is proved excellent in the entire subject and they throw him out without allowing him to say anything further. The play is full of humour and full of ludicrous situation. It also shows the ability of the teachers to manage the situation and how they tackle Wasserkopf without spoiling the reputation of their school.

A DEFENCELESS CREATURE
A Defenceless Creature (About the Play)

Some say, don't negotiate with terrorists. Okay, Madame Shtchukin is not carrying a bomb -- but to Kistunov whose job is to deal with the clients of the bank who have petitions -- she is as dangerous as Carlos the Jackal.Kistunov is not in the best of health. Maybe it's the gout, the job or his life -- but his defenses are down. And then came Madame Shtchukin. As Bob Dylan once sang: "when got nothing, you got nothing to lose."She is not going to take no for an answer. Why should she? She's been down this road before and the door has been shut in her face. Logic. Reason. Forgetaboutit. What she's looking for is some compassion. Some sympathy. They are in short supply. So she'll squeeze it out -- like toothpaste in a used-up tube -- from any official she can can get her hands on.Fortunately for Madame Shtchukin she has come to the right place. You have here a tug of war between two defenseless creatures. One who society has turned its back on and is beyond desperate to secure whatever help she can find -- and another whose health has led him to the verge of a nervous breakdown and thus susceptible to unrelenting remonstrations Both will do whatever they can to relieve their situation. Madame Shtchukin smells weakness. She won't give up until she gets her relief. Kistunov just wants to end the torture and he's willing to pay the price to get some peace of mind.Unfortunately, Kistunov didn't hear Madame Shtchukin last words after paying her off: "Kistunov, this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."

About the Play
Vasant Sabnis’s (Saiyan Bhaye Kotwal)

The story is that of a king and his scheming prime minister. Following the death of the administrative head - the kotwal, the Prime Minister promptly fills the coveted post with his inept and undeserving brother-in-law. As per the hierarchy, the present Havaldar ought to have been promoted to that post. The wronged Havaldar along with his sweetheart Mainavati plans to frame the new Kotwal. Mainavati, who is a dancer, works her charms on the Kotwal and then beseeches him to fulfill her numerous wishes (hence the name, Vichha Majhi Puri Kara). She orders him to bring her the king's ring, chain and finally the king's four-poster bed (chhapri palang) - which he does. The play's slapstick comedy brings out the political undercurrents of nepotism.
