Time : 10:00 am to 6:00 pm
Entry : Free
Event Description : Pallav Chander makes his art debut with an autobiographical show 'Decoding A Dyslexic Mind'.
Pallav shows a remarkable confidence in the autobiographical 35-odd works which include oils on canvas, acrylic on canvas and paperworks. Transcending mediums and genres – he has created textural, semi-abstract figurative works and abstracts too - Pallav’s imagination is inspired by mainly one theme – his own life.
As art curator Roobina Karode writes in the catalogue essay: “Decoding a dyslexic mind is about a particular mind, about Pallav Chander, a young artist who, one fine day snapped out of memories of his uncomfortable school days and grew up to do what he enjoyed the most- make art. While still in school, Pallav had experienced a certain lack of speed in comprehending and writing and these grasping difficulties instilled a certain anxiety towards social interaction and team work in the classroom. As he came to be aware of his disability, but had not yet learnt to come to terms with being dyslexic, he shied away from people, often due to peer pressure and the fear of being judged. With his mother’s constant effort and encouragement Pallav was first introduced to performing arts and theatre workshops in the city, and this brought a gradual but dramatic change in his persona, as he had to be on stage and give his role the required emotion/expression in front of an audience. His appetite for the arts was reinforced by his experiences doing theatre.”
In the current show, the triptych titled Mind Sees What It Chooses to See, imprints of hands fade or strengthen as one moves one’s eyes sideways, and he calls this series ‘performance art’. “I dip my hands in paint and start applying them on canvas - it’s like a performance going on in a two-dimensional plane.”
Biological Knot, Separation and Birth are works which reflect his personal life and characters as well. Writes Roobina Karode: “In one of them, he depicts his birth, his coming into the world, born with eyes like flashes, awakened to his new being, in another, the solemn interior capturing the death of his grandfather or his lonely, card-playing grandmother. All of these important figures in the family, subject to his perception of them, both in everyday life situations as well as in memory. The thick impasto of paint makes the figures obdurate in treatment, the subjective emotion distanced and yet embedded in the work.”
