AWARDS
AIFACS cash award of Rs. 25,000/- awarded to Shri Ravinder Dutt from New Delhi for his entry “Bird Cage”.
The work "Bird Cage" is not only a tribute to the lesser known women of the Harem both in  India and elsewhere in the world, I see it as a reflection of today's society everywhere. The work does not remain gender specific here and assumes a multifaceted interpretation. It is also a direct satire on how we as humans are and how we all wear masks of our own and what society labels us based on what we are perceived to be. The "forms" that we have assumed based on the work that we do in our lives. It also captures vividly the opulence and grandeur of the Mughal times and the plight of the Bandhis, Kaneez or the slave girls who were bought, sold, gifted, acquired or plundered and though surrounded by luxury and comfort were mere objects of use to the extent that they had no names they were called by the names of the days that the emperor would call upon them for their service.  With this work the artist has thrown an open question to the society trying to relate to our contemporary lives, are we ever able to break our shells, break free, aren't we all slaves to situations, institutions, circumstances, religion, elders, society, workplace, households, our own desires or should I say life. Aren't we all mere birds in our own cages with restrictions imposed upon us????  Would we ever break free....
