Event Description : 'Rigoletto' Opera film screening
Rigoletto is based on the Victor Hugo play Le Roi s’amuse, which was banned in France for fifty years after its first production. The tragic story involves the libertine Duke of Mantua, who is encouraged in his licentious behavior with the wives of his courtiers by his court jester, Rigoletto. Fate, however, strikes back at both when Rigoletto’s innocent and beautiful young daughter Gilda is secretly seduced by the Duke. Gilda falls genuinely in love with the Duke and eventually sacrifices her life to save him from an assassin hired by Rigoletto to kill him.
Rigoletto contains some of Verdi’s best loved melodies, as well as some of his most dramatically effective musical characterizations. It was an instant success at its premiere and was being performed all over Europe and the Americas within five years of its first performance. It remains one of the most popular operas in the entire repertoire and a shining example of Verdi’s operatic genius.
