Event Description : Seventh IESHR Annual Lecture - Eminent historian Wang Hui, Professor of Modern Chinese Literature and Intellectual Thought, Tsinghua University, Beijing, speaks on 'Between System And Society: Regional Perspectives on China and Asia'. Even in the context of the discussion of highly concrete problems about China and Asia, large questions such as “what is China” and "what is Asia" remains hidden at the heart of all concerns. Prof. Hui revisits the idea of region, especially the idea of ethnic region, through the lens of the dual concepts of transsystemic society and supra-societal system. While “trans-systemic society” refers to a social network that binds various cultures, ethnic groups, religions, languages and other systems, the concept of "supra-societal system" implies the fact that any given society is always in a relationship with other societies' technologies, techniques, ideas and beliefs.
