Event Description : Janapada Sampada Division is organizing a lecture “Hybridization of Punjabi music with African-Caribbean in the Diaspora space” by Prof. Anjali Gera Roy.
This lecture will examine various aspects of Indian West Indian sonic hybridization by tracing the history of Bhangra’s going black or kaala, beginning with Apache Indian’s ragamuffin craze to ‘Shady Tour 2004’ where Apache was backed by The Reggae Revolution Band from Birmingham. It will cover various kinds of mixing that came in between, including active collaborations, rappings, remixing, samplings and so on that made Punjabi and Jamaican patois dialogue in global popular cultural space.
Anjali Gera Roy is a Professor in the Department of Humanities of Social Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. She has published a number of essays in literary, film and cultural studies, authored a book on African fiction, edited an anthology on the Nigerian writer Wole Soyinka and co-edited another on the Indo-Canadian novelist Rohinton Mistry.
