Event Description : TPS (The Poetry Society) Annual Lecture by Prof. Shiv K Kumar ["Reflections on Contemporary Indian English Poetry"]
About the speaker : Prof. Shiv K Kumar (b. 1921) is the most senior well-known Indian English poet. In 1956 he received his Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Cambridge. He taught English literature at several institutions including the Osmania University, Hyderabad, and the University of Hyderabad. He retired as the Vice-Chancellor (I/c) of the University of Hyderabad in 1980. He was Visiting Professor at the Universities of Oklahoma and Northern Iowa, and Visiting Professor at the Universities of Drake, Hofstra, Marshall, etc. He was also a Visiting Fulbright Fellow at Yale University. He is the author of ten books of poetry, five novels, two short story collections, a play and a translation of Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s selected poems.
In 1978, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, London. He has also served as Commonwealth Visiting Professor of English at the University of Kent at Canterbury. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1987 for his collection of poems Trapfalls in the Sky. In 2001 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan for his contribution to literature. He lives in Hyderabad.
