Event Description : LILA Foundation presents 'Salma' film screening, poetry reading and discussion.

Born into a conservative Muslim family in Tamil Nadu's in 1968, Rokkaih alias Rajathi's life was ordinary till she was 13. From a school dropout towards becoming the Chairperson of the Social Welfare Board of Tamil Nadu, and being one of the most widely translated, widely travelled poet of our times, Salma captures the moving saga of the extraordinary life of an Indian woman.

Director : Kim Longinotto

Language : Tamil with English subtitles

Year : 2013

Background : LILA Lumieres is not a movie zone of comfort. It is a space to critique the moving and talking image, appreciate its form as medium and message, and assess its relevance, then-now-then.

We open this space with the screening of Kim Longinotto's film SALMA, on the Tamil poet and activist, Salma, whose transition from a school dropout in a small Tamil Nadu village to one of the most widely travelled and translated contemporary Indian poets is indeed a moving picture.

We will begin the evening's programme with a reading of Salma's poetry in seven languages, Ahomiya, Bangla, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Tamil and Urdu, read by Salma and her translators themselves.

A significant part of the programme is an appraisal of the film by Aparna Sanyal, noted documentary filmmaker, whose works have won acclaim internationally. We include this critical reading of SALMA, because  we see the powerful presence of a protagonist often deters the audience from looking critically at a film as social medium, and from analysing the politics/apolitics its form presents.

Aparna's presentation will be followed by the film screening and an open conversation with Salma. SALMA: INSPIRING MINDS is subtitled Many Tongues of Poetry!
