Event Description : Roopa Mehta of “Sasha” and Sonam Dubal of “Sanskar” invite you to the launch of “Tsutra,” an exhibition that celebrates craft with an environmental awareness through affordable contemporary ‘glocally’ styled ensembles for  women and home accessories. A collaboration between Sanskar and Sasha (NGO working with crafts from Bengal and the eastern regions of India), featuring hand woven textiles, prints, surface detailing in kurtas, kaftans, tribal paneled tunics, saris, stoles, patchwork and layered jackets and wraps in various cotton textures and silk prints.  Also featuring special Sasha leather hand  bags and totes and  recycled and embroidered home products in quilting and kantha.

Studied at India’s prestigious..Faculty  of Management Studies. Delhi University, BA Hons from Lady Shriram and schooling from Convent of Jesus and Mary, Delhi, Roopa Mehta believes that, “There is a strong need for constant innovation, calling for a greater understanding and co-operation among designers, technologists and producers. Mechanical tools and appropriate technologies will increase productivity and performance. Meeting business goals effectively requires a shift from production to business orientation”.

That, the synergy between the designer and the craftsperson creates value both at the product and market level, by providing cutting edge design inputs to artisans and maintaining high quality specs on the product end, while simultaneously identifying and developing a growing market for its products. For design development and product diversification, Sasha assigns designers projects through the year with the main objective of developing a range of season specific designed products for the international and domestic market.”

Sonam’s coming on board was thus a foregone conclusion. A chance meeting in 2012 saw Roopa inviting Sonam to develop a new clothing line with Sasha a time, that Sonam identifies as “when it all slowly started coming together”, when they planned an exhibition of a collection of, well crafted and detailed  garments for mainly women and some amount of meditation wear and home accessories in Delhi. An endeavour to enjoy pan India visibility in time.

Sasha offers a product range that seamlessly integrates modern designs and styles with traditional skills and cultural heritage, while propagating environment friendly practices. It includes textiles, leather, jute, cane and bamboo, wood, stone, metal crafts, jewellery, pottery, decorative hangings, herbal body care products and organic food products. Hand-processes include dyeing, block and screen printing, leather embossing, kantha and aari embroideries, appliqué, dhokra and more.

Today, Sasha has a core group of 70 companies to which it provides development inputs. Despite that, the craftsmen themselves are encouraged to create. Sasha exports to countries in Western Europe as well as to Holland, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and the US. The brand has also been showcased at the home fashion trade show - Maison et Objet and at the FAIR TRADE & FRIENDS 2013 at Dortmund, Germany.
