Event Description : 'Chillia Taximen and the Social Infrastructures of Labour in Mumbai' a talk by Dr. Tarini Bedi, Assistant Professor, Department of Anthropology, University of Illinois at Chicago.
The talk explores the urban taxi as a part of the debate over urban development, urban infrastructures and urban transport policies. Based on ongoing fieldwork with a community of Muslim taxi-drivers (the Chillia) in Mumbai for who taxi-driving is a hereditary profession that relies on kin, ethnic and linguistic networks.
