Event Description : 'GHOSTS (Gespenster)' film screening as part of New, New German Cinema : Focus on Two Directors' Films by Andreas Dresen & Christian Petzold
A haunting Grimm fairy tale-like intimate drama set in modern Berlin that leaves a bleak ambiguous ending for its chance-and-coincidence nihilistic story. The film connects two seemingly unrelated stories of Wealthy French couple-- Pierre Hulet and his mentally troubled wife Francoise and Nina, a vulnerable, 17-year-old from a foster.
Format : DVD
Language : English subtitles
Director: Christian Petzold
Background : Over the past decade, German cinema has been revived with the emergence of a string of remarkable new filmmakers who have won international film awards, including four Academy Award nominations for Best Foreign Language Film with two films walking away with the Oscars. Beginning with Christian Petzold, Thomas Arslan and Angela Schanelec who in contrast to the more conventional efforts of Fatih Akin and Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, have based their work in an emphasis on formal experimentation over spectacle and a preference for narrative experimentation over storytelling based on character psychology, whether transparent or ambiguous. As a group, these filmmakers are often referred to as "the Berlin School." Andreas Dresen working outside of this group is considered a trailblazer in New German Cinema with a reputation for being unique in his filmmaking approach. His idiosyncratic body of work, walking the fine line between reality and fiction, unafraid of dealing with social outcasts and exploring subjects buried deep in the margins of contemporary society.
